Mama Bear UniversityThis year I noticed that several of my students were struggling with counting and number recognition, but not all in the same way. Some students were still working on numbers 0–5, while others could count larger sets but struggled specifically with teen numbers. A few students recognized numbers easily but had difficulty with 1:1 correspondence when counting objects. If you’ve ever taught Kindergarten, you know exactly what I mean — the range of skills can be huge.
I kept finding myself needing an activity that would:
- give students meaningful practice
- allow for differentiation
- and still feel FUN
Because let’s be honest… if it feels like another worksheet, I’m going to lose some of my kiddos before we even start. That’s when I decided to create these differentiated counting board games. I wanted something hands-on and engaging that would let students practice counting and number recognition in a low-pressure way. The best part is that each game targets a different range of numbers:
- 0–5
- 0–10
- 11–15
- 15–20
- mixed 0–20 review
This made it so much easier to meet students where they are without making anyone feel “behind.”
My students have loved:
- 🎲 rolling the die
- ⭐ moving around the board
- 🧸 counting objects
- 🔢 identifying numbers
- 🎉 and honestly just feeling successful while practicing math skills
One thing I especially love is that the games encourage math talk naturally. Students are counting out loud, helping one another, and explaining their thinking while they play. And from a teacher perspective? They’re low prep, easy to reuse, and perfect for centers, intervention groups, or partner practice.
Sometimes the best classroom resources come from simply noticing a need in our own small groups and trying to make learning a little more joyful for our students. That’s exactly how this resource came to be.
